Job description

About Big Cartel...

Big Cartel is an e-commerce platform that gives creators, artists, makers, and small brands from all over the world the power to open their own online stores and make a living doing what they love. Since 2005, we’ve helped people sell over $3.5 billion of their work while remaining a 100% independent 35 person company.

Driven by our passion for creativity and innovation, we stand as a haven for small brands connecting their passion with opportunity. As we love to say, “you don’t have to sell out to sell online”.

About the Role…

Big Cartel is looking for a Principal Product Designer to help us evolve our platform and imagine what the future of e-commerce is for makers, creators and small indie businesses. It's not only an exciting mission, but one that has deceptively challenging design problems. You'll play a pivotal role through end-to-end ownership of product features, while also having the opportunity to impact our product strategy and shape our roadmap.

This role is fully remote and you’ll report directly to the Chief Product Officer. Your day-to-day will have you working closest with rest of the Product Team (3 PMs, 2 Designers and you!) and your engineering squad counterparts, but you’ll also have the opportunity to collaborate across the company, working hand-in-hand with marketing, growth, and customer success. You’ll come to work every day to ensure our product resonates with our customers and continues to fuel our mutual success.

As this fully remote role has team members located in the Pacific and Mountain time zones, it requires closely aligning work schedules to ensure effective collaboration, communication and foster a great team culture.

Job requirements

In this role you will…

  • Own the end-to-end design (user research, usability testing, interactions, visual design, prototyping) across our web and mobile app products, setting the vision and aligning project goals
  • Be a generalist who takes projects to the finish line when needed. You do whatever it takes to bring projects to market, even if tasks fall outside design, because you care about our customers and making a greater impact on the company.
  • Work hand-in-hand with Product Management, Engineering, and other departments to integrate design thinking across the company
  • Maintain a high standard of product quality by working alongside our engineers in a tight-knit iterative process
  • Partner with other designers and contribute to our design culture and design thinking across the company

You’ll be great fit for this role if…

  • You are a curious learner and a self-starter who isn’t afraid to dive into the product, processes and problems
  • You have experience solving complex problems with simple design solutions
  • You make thoughtful tradeoffs that balance creating delightful experiences with the realities of business goals and timelines
  • You can work within and expand on an existing product without needing to redesign the entire thing
  • You care about your teammates and work to influence the team culture in a positive and healthy direction
  • You sweat the small stuff and care about the details that make products both usable and delightful
  • You dream about Figma, and already looking forward to Config 2025 (and 2026)
  • You have 8+ years of design experience
  • You remember to submit a portfolio, including a password if it's protected

Benefits & perks

For all of our employees, we offer a full slate of benefits, including competitive salaries (compensation: $160,000-175,000), medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401k with employer match, flexible time off and mental health resources.

Note: This role is only open to candidates in the United States.
